Problem

A diver inside a swimming pool is 300 m300\,\text{m} away from a bell fixed to the wall of the pool. At the same instant, another student stands in air at a horizontal distance of 300 m300\,\text{m} from the bell (the bell is half-submerged so that its sound can reach both through water and through air). Given: speed of sound in water =1500 m/s=1500\,\text{m/s}; speed of sound in air =340 m/s=340\,\text{m/s}. (a) Calculate the time taken by sound to reach the diver through water. (b) Calculate the time taken by sound to reach the student standing in air. (c) By how much time does one student hear the sound before the other? Name the student who hears it first and give a brief reason.
