Problem

An elevator of mass 1000 kg1000\,\text{kg} is suspended by a single vertical cable. Inside the elevator a 15 kg15\,\text{kg} package is hung from the ceiling by a light spring scale (similar to a fish-weighing scale). The scale attached to the package reads 170 N170\,\text{N} while the elevator is moving vertically. Take g=9.8 m s−2g = 9.8\,\text{m\,s}^{-2}. (i) Draw the free-body diagram of the package and hence find the magnitude and direction of the elevator’s acceleration. (ii) Using the value obtained in part (i), determine the tension in the supporting cable of the elevator at that instant.
