Problem

A bucket of mass 8 kg8\,\text{kg} tied to a rope is initially at rest at the mouth of a well. The bucket is lowered 12 m12\,\text{m} into the well to fetch water and is then raised back to its original position. After filling, the mass of water in the bucket is 10 kg10\,\text{kg}. Take g=9.8 m s−2g = 9.8\,\text{m s}^{-2}. (i) Calculate the change in gravitational potential energy of the empty bucket when it reaches the bottom relative to the mouth of the well. (ii) Determine the change in gravitational potential energy when the filled bucket is pulled back to the mouth. (iii) Find the total work done by the person during the complete operation of lowering and raising the bucket.
