Problem

A laboratory loudspeaker is adjusted so that it emits a sound wave whose wavelength in steel is 2.0 cm2.0\,\text{cm}. (a) Given that the speed of sound in steel is 5960 m/s5960\,\text{m/s}, calculate the frequency of this sound in hertz and also express it in kilohertz. (b) The same loudspeaker is now operated in air without changing its frequency. If the speed of sound in air is 340 m/s340\,\text{m/s}, determine the new wavelength of the sound in air. (c) Comment on which quantity – frequency or wavelength – changes when a sound wave passes from one medium to another while the source continues to vibrate at the same rate.
