Problem

A 2 kg2\,\text{kg} trolley is rolling in a straight line on a smooth horizontal track with an initial velocity of 1 m s−11\,\text{m\,s}^{-1} in the positive xx-direction. A horizontal force acts on the trolley as described below: • +10 N+10\,\text{N} for the first 0.50 s0.50\,\text{s} • +6 N+6\,\text{N} for the next 0.50 s0.50\,\text{s} • −4 N-4\,\text{N} (opposite to initial motion) for the next 1.0 s1.0\,\text{s} (i) For each time interval, calculate the change in momentum of the trolley (magnitude and sign). (ii) Determine the total change in momentum after the complete 2.0 s2.0\,\text{s} interaction. (iii) Find the velocity of the trolley at the end of 2.0 s2.0\,\text{s}. (iv) State whether the trolley is still moving in the original direction after 2.0 s2.0\,\text{s} and justify your answer with calculations.
