Problem

A cricket ball of mass 150 g150\,\text{g} is travelling horizontally towards a fielder at 40 m/s40\,\text{m/s}. The fielder catches the ball and brings it to rest in 0.05 s0.05\,\text{s}. Take the direction towards the fielder as positive. (a) Calculate the initial momentum of the ball just before it is caught. (b) What is the change in momentum of the ball during the catching process? State its sign clearly. (c) Determine the average force exerted by the fielder on the ball while bringing it to rest. (d) State the direction of this average force with respect to the initial motion of the ball.
