Problem

Two sealed containers, both at 300 K, are connected by opening a stopcock so that the gases mix and occupy a combined volume of 5.00 L. • Container A: 2.00 L of neon at 600 torr. • Container B: 3.00 L of argon at 450 torr. Assume ideal behavior throughout and that the temperature remains constant. (a) Calculate the number of moles of neon originally present in Container A. (b) Calculate the number of moles of argon originally present in Container B. (c) After the stopcock is opened and equilibrium is reached, determine the total pressure of the gas mixture. (d) Determine the mole fraction of each gas in the final mixture and explain how your values are consistent with the partial pressures implied by your answer to part (c).
