Problem

A small block of mass 1 kg1\,\text{kg} is released from rest at the top of a smooth track. The highest point AA of the track is 4 m4\,\text{m} above the lowest point BB. Beyond BB, the track rises again smoothly without friction. (i) Calculate the speed of the block when it reaches the lowest point BB. Take g=9.8 m/s2g = 9.8\,\text{m/s}^2. (ii) How high above BB will the block rise on the other side before momentarily coming to rest? (iii) A rough patch capable of doing non-conservative work is fixed on the rising part of the track at a point 1 m1\,\text{m} above BB. If the block is brought to rest exactly at this spot, find the amount of work done by the rough patch on the block. (iv) Using your results, verify whether the work done by the rough patch equals the change in mechanical energy of the block.
