Problem

During an experiment, a student sends electromagnetic pulses through a long evacuated tube and finds that the pulses cover a distance of 120 m120\,\text{m} in 4.007×10−7 s4.007 \times 10^{-7}\,\text{s}. (i) Calculate the experimental value of the speed of the pulses. (ii) Taking ε0=8.854×10−12 C2 N−1 m−2\varepsilon_0 = 8.854 \times 10^{-12}\,\text{C}^2\,\text{N}^{-1}\,\text{m}^{-2}, use the value obtained in (i) to compute an experimental value of the vacuum permeability μ0\mu_0. (iii) The accepted value of μ0\mu_0 is 4π×10−7 N A−24\pi \times 10^{-7}\,\text{N\,A}^{-2}. Determine the percentage deviation of the student’s value from the accepted value. (iv) List any two possible experimental factors that could account for the deviation obtained in part (iii).
