Problem

A student standing at one end of a long, empty corridor claps her hands once and hears the echo after 0.60 s0.60\,\text{s}. The air temperature is 25∘C25^{\circ}\text{C}, for which the speed of sound is 346 m ⁣/s346\,\text{m\!/s}. (i) Calculate the distance between the student and the reflecting wall. (ii) To make each clap coincide exactly with the echo of the previous clap, she begins clapping at a regular rate. Determine the frequency at which she must clap. (iii) Using the frequency obtained in part (ii), calculate the wavelength of the sound in air at 25∘C25^{\circ}\text{C}.
