Problem

A positively charged thin metal ring of radius RR is fixed in the xyxy plane with its centre at the origin OO. A negatively charged particle PP is released from rest at the point (0,0,z0)(0, 0, z_0) where z0>0z_0 > 0. Then the motion of PP is (1) periodic, for all values of z0z_0 satisfying 0<z0<∞0 < z_0 < \infty (2) simple harmonic, for all values of z0z_0 satisfying 0<z0≤R0 < z_0 \le R (3) approximately simple harmonic, provided z0≪Rz_0 \ll R (4) such that PP crosses OO and continues to move along the negative zz axis towards z=−∞z = -\infty
