Problem

Two vertical springs, P and Q, hang side-by-side. Identical 0.500 kg0.500\,\text{kg} masses are attached, and each mass is allowed to come to rest. • For spring P the mass settles 3.0 cm3.0\,\text{cm} below the spring’s relaxed length. • For spring Q the mass settles 4.5 cm4.5\,\text{cm} below the spring’s relaxed length. Take g=9.8 m s−2g=9.8\,\text{m}\,\text{s}^{-2}. (a) Determine the numerical value of the stiffness constant for spring P, including units. (b) Determine the numerical value of the stiffness constant for spring Q, including units. (c) Calculate the ratio kP/kQk_P/k_Q and state which spring is stiffer.
