Problem

A rubber ball of mass 0.20 kg0.20\,\text{kg} is released from rest at a height of 2.0 m2.0\,\text{m} above a horizontal concrete floor. It strikes the floor and rebounds vertically upward with a speed of 4.0 m s−14.0\,\text{m s}^{-1}. The duration of contact with the floor is 0.020 s0.020\,\text{s}. Assume upward direction to be positive and take g=9.8 m s−2g = 9.8\,\text{m s}^{-2}. (i) Calculate the speed of the ball just before it strikes the floor. (ii) Determine the change in linear momentum of the ball during contact with the floor. (iii) Compute the magnitude of the average force exerted by the floor on the ball during impact, clearly indicating its direction.
