Problem
A mining company isolated two different batches of a black solid believed to be copper(II) sulfide. The elemental mass data for each batch are given below.
Batch 1: 1.27 g Cu and 0.63 g S
Batch 2: 5.08 g Cu and 2.52 g S
(a) For each batch, determine the mass percent of copper.
(b) Compare the values obtained in part (a). State whether the two batches satisfy the expectation for samples of the same pure compound and support your conclusion with numerical evidence.
(c) If the percent copper in a third batch were experimentally determined to be 64.1 %, predict whether this batch would be accepted as the same compound, assuming a maximum allowable deviation of ±1.0 %.
