Problem

A dolphin emits an ultrasonic pulse of frequency 120 kHz120\,\text{kHz} under seawater while hunting for fish. (a) If the speed of sound in seawater is 1530 m/s1530\,\text{m/s}, calculate the wavelength of this ultrasound in seawater. (b) The pulse is reflected back from a school of fish and returns to the dolphin in 0.40 s0.40\,\text{s}. Determine the distance of the fish from the dolphin. (c) Ultrasound scanners used by veterinarians pass the same 120 kHz120\,\text{kHz} sound through bone where the speed of sound is about 3500 m/s3500\,\text{m/s}. Calculate the wavelength of this ultrasound in bone. (d) Briefly discuss how the change in wavelength between seawater and bone could affect the resolution of images formed by ultrasound equipment.
