Problem

A rectangular glass slab of thickness 6.0 cm6.0\,\text{cm} is placed in air. When observed normally from above, the lower surface of the slab appears to be 4.0 cm4.0\,\text{cm} below the upper surface. (i) Calculate the refractive index of the glass. (ii) If the slab is now completely immersed in a liquid of refractive index 1.251.25, determine the apparent thickness of the slab when viewed normally from the liquid. (iii) Comment on whether the glass appears thicker or thinner in the liquid compared to in air, giving a short reason based on your calculation.
