Problem

A cyclist starts from a lamp post, rides 500 m500\,\text{m} due east along a straight road, and then turns around and rides the same road back to the lamp post. Answer the following in the spaces provided: (i) Define (a) distance and (b) displacement. (ii) Calculate the total distance traveled by the cyclist. (iii) Calculate the displacement of the cyclist at the end of the ride. (iv) Explain clearly why the displacement calculated in part (iii) is zero even though the cyclist has covered a non-zero distance.
