Problem

(a) What is meant by a node and an antinode in the context of a standing wave? (b) An air column that is open at both ends and another air column that is closed at one end have the same length L. Give qualitative reasons to explain why the fundamental frequency of the open column is twice that of the closed column. (c) A laboratory demonstration is set up to determine the speed of sound in air using each of the two columns of part (b). Explain, without doing any numerical calculation, which of the two arrangements would be more suitable if one desires a lower measuring range for the required frequency source and why.
