Problem

An elevator starts from rest at the ground floor. It accelerates upward at 3.0 m/s23.0\,\text{m/s}^2 for 4.0 s4.0\,\text{s}, then immediately accelerates downward at 2.0 m/s22.0\,\text{m/s}^2 for 3.0 s3.0\,\text{s}. A 70 kg70\,\text{kg} teacher is standing on a bathroom scale during the entire motion. Determine (a) the maximum and (b) the minimum readings the scale registers during this seven-second interval.
