Problem

A bullet of mass 5.0 g5.0\,\text{g} enters a stationary wooden block of mass 1.0 kg1.0\,\text{kg} with a speed of 300 m s−1300\,\text{m\,s}^{-1}, emerges from the opposite side with a speed of 100 m s−1100\,\text{m\,s}^{-1}, and remains inside the block for 2.0 ms2.0\,\text{ms}. Neglect any other external forces. (i) Calculate the magnitude and direction of the average force exerted by the block on the bullet while it is inside. (ii) State the magnitude of the average force exerted by the bullet on the block during the same interval.
