Problem

A 0.145 kg0.145\,\text{kg} baseball is initially at rest just before it is struck by a bat. During the brief contact, the bat exerts an average force of 900 N900\,\text{N} on the ball directed due east for 1.2×10−3 s1.2 \times 10^{-3}\,\text{s}. Neglect air resistance during the impact. (a) Determine the magnitude of the impulse delivered to the baseball by the bat. (b) Calculate the speed of the baseball immediately after it loses contact with the bat. (c) The batter is standing firmly on Earth. Explain why the momentum of the bat–ball system is not conserved during the impact interval, citing any external forces that are relevant.
