Problem

A conical tent is to be erected by stitching a canvas to a cylindrical wall. The cylindrical portion has radius 3.5 m3.5\,\text{m} and height 2.1 m2.1\,\text{m}, while the conical roof has the same base radius and a slant height of 4.9 m4.9\,\text{m}. The circular rim that joins the two parts remains inside and therefore need not be covered. (a) Calculate the total surface area of canvas required for the entire tent. (b) If the canvas is supplied in rolls 1.4 m1.4\,\text{m} wide, find the minimum length of canvas that must be purchased to make one tent, assuming no wastage in cutting and stitching.
