Problem

A metal organ pipe is open at both ends and emits its fundamental note of frequency 256 Hz256\,\text{Hz} at 20∘C20^{\circ}\text{C} when the speed of sound in air is 340 m s−1340\,\text{m s}^{-1}. Answer the following: (i) Calculate the length of the pipe. (ii) Without altering its length, one end of the pipe is now closed. Determine the frequency of the first overtone produced in this new condition. (iii) The same pipe (open at both ends) is taken to a warmer room where the speed of sound becomes 350 m s−1350\,\text{m s}^{-1}. Find the new fundamental frequency emitted.
