Problem

The solubility of calcium fluoride, CaF2_2, is temperature dependent. The table below lists experimentally measured values of the solubility–product constant at two temperatures.
Temperature (°C)KspK_{sp}
25 °C3.9×10−113.9\times10^{-11}
35 °C7.1×10−117.1\times10^{-11}
A laboratory technician prepares saturated solutions of CaF2_2 in separate 1.000 L1.000\,\text{L} volumetric flasks at 25 °C and 35 °C, respectively. (a) Using the data for 25 °C, calculate the maximum mass of CaF2_2 (in grams) that dissolves to produce a saturated solution in 1.000 L1.000\,\text{L} of water. (b) Repeat the calculation in part (a) for 35 °C. (c) Determine the percent increase in the solubility of CaF2_2 when the temperature is raised from 25 °C to 35 °C. (d) Explain, with reference to your quantitative results, how temperature affects the solubility of CaF2_2 in water.
