Problem

Light of wavelength 400 nm400\,\text{nm} is incident on a metallic surface whose work function is 2.3 eV2.3\,\text{eV}. Take h=6.63×10−34 J sh=6.63\times10^{-34}\,\text{J\,s}, c=3×108 m s−1c=3\times10^{8}\,\text{m\,s}^{-1} and e=1.6×10−19 Ce=1.6\times10^{-19}\,\text{C}. (i) Calculate the threshold frequency ν0\nu_0 for this metal. (ii) Determine whether the given light will cause photoelectric emission. Justify your answer by comparing photon energy with the work function. (iii) If emission takes place, find the maximum kinetic energy Kmax⁡K_{\max} of the emitted photoelectrons (in electron-volts).
