Problem
Four identical smooth balls A, B, C and D are suspended in a straight line so that they just touch each other at rest. Ball A is given a horizontal speed of 2.5m s−1 towards B while the other three balls are stationary. The coefficient of restitution for every collision between any two balls is 0.90. Neglect air resistance.
(i) Find the speed with which ball B moves immediately after being struck by ball A.
(ii) Calculate the speeds of balls C and D after the complete sequence of collisions is over and no further impacts occur.
(iii) Determine the percentage of the initial kinetic energy of the system that remains after all collisions have ceased.
