Problem

In a ripple-tank demonstration, a vibrating probe is used to generate water waves of different frequencies while the depth of water is kept constant. Two sets of observations are recorded: • Set I: frequency f1=15 Hzf_1 = 15\,\text{Hz} produces wavelength λ1=2.4 cm\lambda_1 = 2.4\,\text{cm}. • Set II: frequency f2=20 Hzf_2 = 20\,\text{Hz} produces an unknown wavelength λ2\lambda_2. Using these data, answer the following: (a) Assuming the wave speed is the same in both sets, calculate its value. (b) Determine the wavelength λ2\lambda_2 corresponding to Set II. (c) Predict the wavelength that would be obtained if the generator frequency were adjusted to 12 Hz12\,\text{Hz}. (d) Explain, with reference to your results, why the product of wavelength and frequency is expected to remain constant for water waves in the tank at a fixed depth.
