Problem

In a ripple-tank experiment a bright crest is photographed as it moves across the water surface. The crest is at x=6.0 cmx = 6.0\,\text{cm} at t=0t = 0 and at x=30.0 cmx = 30.0\,\text{cm} at t=0.12 st = 0.12\,\text{s}. In a separate stroboscopic photograph taken at an instant t=0.04 st = 0.04\,\text{s}, four successive crests occupy positions x=10.0 cmx = 10.0\,\text{cm} and x=26.0 cmx = 26.0\,\text{cm}, the first and the fourth crest respectively. (i) Using the crest-tracking data, calculate the speed of the wave. (ii) From the photograph at t=0.04 st = 0.04\,\text{s}, determine the wavelength. (iii) Employing your answers to parts (i) and (ii), find the frequency of the wave. (iv) If the crest described above has a maximum height of 1.5 mm1.5\,\text{mm}, discuss whether changing this amplitude would affect the wave speed you obtained in part (i).
