Problem

A rectangular bar magnet is placed horizontally on a table. (i) Draw a neat, labelled diagram showing at least eight magnetic field lines around the magnet. Mark the directions on the lines. (ii) The magnet is cut along its width into two equal smaller bar magnets. Draw the magnetic field line pattern around each of the two pieces. (iii) On the basis of your diagram, explain why cutting the magnet does not isolate a single magnetic pole. (iv) The two pieces are now placed on the table so that their like poles face each other with a small air gap between them. State whether the magnetic field in the air gap will be uniform or non-uniform. Give one reason for your answer.
