Problem

A short force pulse acts separately on three different hockey pucks S, T and U placed on a smooth horizontal ice surface. The time variation of the horizontal force on each puck is given in the table below (positive sign denotes the +x direction):
Time interval (ms)Force on S (N)Force on T (N)Force on U (N)
0 – 2+10+20+15
2 – 4–100–15
4 – 50–200
Each puck has mass 0.25 kg and is initially at rest. (i) Calculate the net impulse delivered to each puck. Take forces acting in the –x direction as negative. (ii) Using the results of part (i), determine the final velocity of each puck after the force pulse ends. (iii) Arrange the magnitudes of momentum changes for pucks S, T and U in ascending order and justify your answer numerically.
