Problem

Two forces act simultaneously on a particle. Force F1\mathbf{F}_1 has magnitude 8 N8\,\text{N} and acts at 30∘30^{\circ} above the positive xx-axis. A second force F2\mathbf{F}_2 has unknown magnitude and direction. The resultant FR=F1+F2\mathbf{F}_R=\mathbf{F}_1+\mathbf{F}_2 is directed wholly along the positive yy-axis (that is, its xx-component is zero) and has magnitude 12 N12\,\text{N}. Solve the following: (i) Set up the component equations for FR\mathbf{F}_R in terms of the unknown magnitude F2F_2 and its direction angle θ\theta measured from the positive xx-axis. (ii) Determine the numerical values of F2F_2 and θ\theta. (iii) State fully the vector F2\mathbf{F}_2 in unit-vector form.
