Problem
A diver of mass 72 kg steps off the edge of a 10.0 m high platform and falls straight downward into a deep pool. Air resistance is negligible.
(a) Determine the speed of the diver just before she makes contact with the water. Show all steps in your reasoning.
(b) Using your result from part (a), calculate the diver’s translational kinetic energy at the instant just before impact. Give your answer to an appropriate number of significant figures.
(c) After entering the water, the diver is brought to rest over a vertical distance of 1.8 m. If it is assumed that a constant upward resistive force from the water acts on the diver during this deceleration, determine the average magnitude of this force. Clearly outline the energy considerations you use to arrive at your answer.
