Problem

Ocean waves slow down when they move from deep to shallow water, but their frequency remains nearly the same. (i) In deep water a certain set of waves has a wavelength of 12 m12\,\text{m} and a frequency of 0.5 Hz0.5\,\text{Hz}. Calculate the speed of these waves in deep water. (ii) On entering a shallow region the speed of the waves is reduced to 4 m s−14\,\text{m\,s}^{-1}. Determine their wavelength in this region. (iii) Find the ratio of the wavelength in deep water to that in shallow water. (iv) A floating buoy in the shallow region records the passage of crests for 55 minutes. How many crests will it count during this period?
