Problem

A steel bob suspended by a light, inextensible string is adjusted so that its time period of small oscillations at city A is exactly 2.000 s. (i) Define a “seconds pendulum.” (ii) Describe an experimental procedure, using the same pendulum, to compare the acceleration due to gravity at city A and another city B without re-measuring its length. (iii) The pendulum is taken to city B where its time period is found to be 1.005 s while its length is kept unchanged. Explain qualitatively what this observation indicates about the relative magnitudes of acceleration due to gravity at the two cities.
