Problem

In an arithmetic progression, the ppth term is xx and the qqth term is yy, where pp and qq are positive integers with p≠qp \neq q. (i) Write the ppth and qqth terms of the progression in terms of its first term aa and common difference dd. (ii) Using the relations obtained in part (i), express aa and dd in terms of p,q,x,p, q, x, and yy. (iii) Hence, derive an expression for the sum of the first (p+q)(p+q) terms of the progression in terms of p,q,x,p, q, x, and yy only. (iv) Simplify your expression as far as possible and state any special condition under which the sum becomes independent of one of the variables pp or qq. (No numerical substitution is required.)
