Problem

An urn contains 5 red and 3 blue balls. Two balls are drawn successively without replacement. (i) State the definition of conditional probability of an event EE given another event FF with P(F)≠0P(F)\neq 0. (ii) Explain, without performing any algebraic manipulation, why the probability of getting a red ball on the second draw depends on the colour of the first ball drawn in this experiment. (iii) Calculate the probability of drawing a red ball on the second draw (a) when the first ball drawn is red, (b) when the first ball drawn is blue. Use your answers to support the explanation given in part (ii).
