Problem

A steel wire of length 0.80 m0.80\,\text{m} and mass 5.0 g5.0\,\text{g} is stretched between two rigid supports. When plucked, the wire vibrates in its third harmonic at a frequency of 600 Hz600\,\text{Hz}. The speed of sound in air is 340 m/s340\,\text{m/s}. (a) Calculate the wavelength of the standing wave pattern corresponding to the third harmonic on the wire. (b) Determine the speed of transverse waves on the wire. (c) Using your result from part (b), calculate the tension in the wire. (d) Calculate the wavelength of the sound wave in air that is produced by this third harmonic.
