Problem

Two protons inside a nucleus are separated by a centre–to–centre distance of 0.8 fm0.8\,\text{fm}. The magnitude of the attractive nuclear force between them at this separation is measured to be 30 N30\,\text{N}. (i) Calculate the electrostatic (Coulomb) force between the same two protons at this distance. Take k=9×109 N m2C−2k = 9 \times 10^{9}\,\text{N m}^2 \text{C}^{-2} and e=1.6×10−19 Ce = 1.6 \times 10^{-19}\,\text{C}. (ii) Determine the ratio FnuclearFelectrostatic\dfrac{F_{\text{nuclear}}}{F_{\text{electrostatic}}}. (iii) On the basis of the result, comment on the relative strengths and charge dependence of the two interactions within the nuclear domain.
