Problem

A small satellite in low-Earth orbit is equipped with a pair of identical thrusters that fire tangentially to increase the satellite’s speed. When activated, the thrusters together exert a constant forward force of 50 N on the satellite. At the instant the maneuver begins the satellite’s total mass, including its remaining fuel, is 25 kg. During the burn the satellite consumes 5.0 kg of fuel, leaving 20 kg of mass when the maneuver ends. Neglect any external forces except the thruster force. (a) Determine the magnitude of the satellite’s acceleration at the beginning of the burn. (b) Determine the magnitude of the satellite’s acceleration at the end of the burn after 5.0 kg of fuel has been consumed. (c) Compute the ratio of the final acceleration to the initial acceleration and interpret the physical meaning of this ratio in the context of the maneuver.
