Problem

(Radioactivity Units) (i) Define the units becquerel (Bq) and curie (Ci) used for measuring the activity of a radioactive source. (ii) Starting from the definitions given in part (i), show that 1 Ci=3.7×1010 Bq1\,\text{Ci}=3.7\times10^{10}\,\text{Bq}. State clearly the numerical steps involved. (iii) Small laboratory sources often have their activities quoted in μCi\mu\text{Ci} rather than Ci, whereas large power-reactor sources are expressed in Bq. Explain, with quantitative comparison, why using the prefixes m\text{m} (milli) or μ\mu (micro) with Ci is convenient for weak sources, while the SI unit Bq is more suitable for very strong sources.
