Problem

A transparent tank is 30 cm deep. A coin rests on its bottom. (a) State the relation connecting real depth DD, apparent depth dd and refractive index nn of the liquid when the coin is viewed normally from air. (b) The tank is filled with water of refractive index 1.331.33. Calculate the apparent depth of the coin for an observer looking vertically downward. (c) The water is replaced by a liquid of refractive index 1.501.50 to the same depth. Find the new apparent depth of the coin. (d) Using your results, explain why fish inside water appear closer to the surface than they actually are when viewed from above.
