Problem

A 9.45 g sample of a hydrated salt of magnesium sulfate is heated gently until all water of crystallization has been driven off. After cooling, the anhydrous solid weighs 4.62 g. (a) Calculate the number of moles of anhydrous MgSO₄ present in the final solid. (b) Calculate the number of moles of H₂O that were lost during heating. (c) Determine the value of xx in the formula MgSO₄·xxH₂O for the original hydrate and write the complete formula of the hydrated salt. (d) Discuss one experimental source of error that could lead to an xx value slightly lower than the true value.
