Problem

The emissivity of a glazed ceramic tile depends on temperature as follows: • ε=0.40\varepsilon = 0.40 for T≤1000 KT \leq 1000\,\text{K} • ε=0.60\varepsilon = 0.60 for T>1000 KT > 1000\,\text{K} A square tile of side 0.50 m0.50\,\text{m} is mounted so that one face radiates to surroundings at a negligible temperature compared with the tile. (i) Calculate the radiant power emitted by the tile when its temperature is 900 K900\,\text{K}. (ii) Calculate the radiant power emitted by the same tile when its temperature is 1100 K1100\,\text{K}. (iii) Determine the ratio of the powers obtained in parts (ii) and (i) and compare it with the value of (1100/900)4(1100/900)^4. Comment briefly on the reason for any difference.
