Problem

The atomic mass of an oxygen-16 atom is 2.65602×10−26 kg2.65602\times10^{-26}\,\text{kg}. The isotope contains eight protons and eight neutrons. (i) Determine the mass of an oxygen-16 nucleus in kilograms. (Mass of an electron =9.109×10−31 kg=9.109\times10^{-31}\,\text{kg}.) (ii) Using mp=1.6726×10−27 kgm_{p}=1.6726\times10^{-27}\,\text{kg} and mn=1.6749×10−27 kgm_{n}=1.6749\times10^{-27}\,\text{kg}, calculate the mass defect of the oxygen-16 nucleus in kilograms. (iii) Express the mass defect obtained in part (ii) (a) in atomic mass units (take 1 u=1.6605×10−27 kg1\,u=1.6605\times10^{-27}\,\text{kg}) and (b) in mega-electron-volts (take c2=9.00×1016 m2 s−2c^{2}=9.00\times10^{16}\,\text{m}^{2}\,\text{s}^{-2} and 1 u=931.5 MeV/c21\,u=931.5\,\text{MeV}/c^{2}).
