Problem

A point charge +qs=2.0 μC+q_{s}=2.0\,\mu\text{C} moves due north at a constant speed vs=3.0×106 m s−1v_{s}=3.0\times10^{6}\,\text{m\,s}^{-1}. At a particular instant a second point, PP, is located r=5.0 cmr=5.0\,\text{cm} due east of the source charge. A test charge qt=−1.5 μCq_{t}=-1.5\,\mu\text{C} is at PP and moves due west with speed vt=2.0×106 m s−1v_{t}=2.0\times10^{6}\,\text{m\,s}^{-1}. Ignore electric forces between the two charges. (a) Calculate the magnitude of the magnetic field at point PP due to the motion of the source charge. (b) Determine the magnitude of the magnetic force exerted on the test charge. (c) State the direction of the magnetic force on the test charge relative to the cardinal directions (north, south, east, west, up, or down). Justify your answer qualitatively.
