Problem

A hiker walks 4.0 km4.0\,\text{km} due north in 50 min50\,\text{min}, then changes direction and walks 3.0 km3.0\,\text{km} due east in 40 min40\,\text{min}. He rests for 10 min10\,\text{min} and finally walks 2.0 km2.0\,\text{km} due south in 20 min20\,\text{min} before setting up camp. (a) Compute the total distance travelled and the total time taken. (b) Determine the magnitude and direction of the resultant displacement from the starting point to the campsite. (c) Calculate the average speed and the average velocity for the entire excursion. (d) Based on your results, classify average speed and average velocity as scalar or vector quantities, giving reasons.
