Problem

Four cyclists P,Q,RP, Q, R and SS start from the same point OO at the same instant and ride for exactly 4 min4\,\text{min}, each choosing a different route as described below: • PP: straight 800 m800\,\text{m} due north. • QQ: straight 600 m600\,\text{m} due east. • RR: 300 m300\,\text{m} north, then 300 m300\,\text{m} east, then 300 m300\,\text{m} south. • SS: rides once around a square track of side 200 m200\,\text{m}, starting and ending at OO. (a) Arrange the four cyclists in descending order of the magnitudes of the distances they have travelled. (b) Arrange the four cyclists in descending order of the magnitudes of their displacements from point OO at the end of 4 min4\,\text{min}. (c) Without performing detailed numerical calculations, give a clear reasoning for each of the two orderings obtained in parts (a) and (b).
