Problem

The position of a toy car moving on the floor is recorded every 5 s5\,\text{s}. Its coordinate xx (in metres, measured east of the starting point) at each instant is given in the table below. (a) Time tt (s): 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 Position xx (m): 0, 12, 25, 33, 25, 12, 0 (b) (i) Using the data, calculate the distance travelled by the car during the entire 30 s30\,\text{s} interval. (c) (ii) Determine the displacement of the car for the same interval. (d) (iii) Compute the average speed and the magnitude of the average velocity. (e) (iv) Show that the numerical value of the average speed is greater than that of the average velocity, and state the physical reason for this difference.
