Problem

A cricket ball of mass 150 g150\,\text{g} travelling horizontally at 25 m s−125\,\text{m\,s}^{-1} is caught and brought to rest by a fielder in 0.04 s0.04\,\text{s}. (i) Calculate the magnitude of the average force exerted by the ball on the fielder’s hands. (ii) State, with reason, the magnitude and direction of the average force exerted by the fielder’s hands on the ball. (iii) The fielder now cups his hands and moves them backward so that the time taken to bring the ball to rest becomes 0.15 s0.15\,\text{s}. Determine the new magnitude of the average force on his hands.
