Problem

Two air columns of equal length L=0.80 mL = 0.80\,\text{m} are constructed from thin-walled tubes. Tube A is open at both ends, while tube B is open at one end and closed at the other. The ambient temperature is such that the speed of sound in air is v=340 m s−1v = 340\,\text{m}\,\text{s}^{-1}. End effects are negligible. (1) Part 1: (a) Calculate the fundamental frequency of tube A and the fundamental frequency of tube B. (2) Part 2: (b) Identify the lowest harmonic number of tube A whose frequency exactly matches a harmonic of tube B, and state the corresponding harmonic number of tube B. (3) Part 3: (c) Determine the numerical value of that common frequency.
